Police in Luweero District have arrested four suspected habitual criminals during an intelligence-led operation targeting individuals accused of terrorising residents through robberies, burglaries and theft.
The operation, conducted on July 15 in Kiyenje Zone, Luweero West Ward, Luweero Town Council, led to the arrest of Derrick Mande, also known as Kaberenge, who police believe is the leader of the group, alongside Fahad Mubiru, Ibrahim Wasswa and Collins Katerega.
According to the Savannah Regional Police spokesperson, ASP Sam Twiineamazima, the suspects are believed to have been involved in a series of violent crimes reported across Luweero District.
“The suspects are accused of being involved in a series of robberies, burglaries, thefts and office break-ins that have been terrorising communities in Luweero District,” ASP Twiineamazima said.
He said preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects are known criminals who were recently released from Bututumula Prison and are alleged to have resumed criminal activities, operating both during the day and at night.
During the operation, police recovered several items suspected to have been used in committing crimes, including locally made master keys, hammers, pangas, scissors, a jim machine, mattresses and other house-breaking tools.
Police also said evidence gathered so far indicates that the suspects allegedly used violence during their operations.
“Evidence and witness statements indicate that the group used iron bars and pavers to injure victims and frequently waylaid residents to steal their property,” Twiineamazima said.
The suspects have been charged with aggravated robbery, theft and possession of breaking implements. They remain in police custody pending their appearance in court.
ASP Twiineamazima commended members of the public whose information helped security agencies carry out the operation and urged residents to continue working with police in combating crime.
“We urge residents to continue cooperating with security agencies by reporting suspicious activity. Ensuring the safety and security of Luweero’s communities remains a top priority,” he said.
